Collections Development Policy

Glenfinnan Station Museum

Adopted: 27 May 2015

About this Policy

This document sets out the Collections Development Policy for Glenfinnan Station Museum and explains how collections are acquired, managed, preserved and, where appropriate, disposed of. It reflects the museum's commitment to responsible stewardship, public benefit and recognised museum standards.

1. Relationship to Other Policies

  • The museum exists to preserve, conserve, research and interpret the railway heritage of the West Highlands.
  • Acquisition and disposal decisions are carried out openly and transparently.
  • Collections are held in trust for the public.
  • Acquisitions outside the stated policy occur only in exceptional circumstances.
  • Collections management follows Museum Accreditation Standards and SPECTRUM procedures.
  • The museum undertakes due diligence before acquiring any item.
  • Items are never disposed of primarily for financial reasons.

2. History of the Collections

The collection centres on the historic Glenfinnan Station buildings and associated railway artefacts relating to signalling, engineering, administration and the wider history of the West Highland Railway.

3. Current Collections

  • Railway carriages and snowplough
  • Signalling and engineering equipment
  • Station artefacts
  • Photographs
  • Archives and correspondence
  • Books, posters and ephemera

4. Future Collecting Priorities

The museum seeks material documenting Glenfinnan Station and the West Highland Railway from 1850 to the present day, including items connected through ownership and operation rather than geography alone.

5. Rationalisation & Disposal

Formal review processes ensure that any rationalisation improves collection management without reducing historical significance. Disposal is considered only where legally, ethically or conservationally justified.

7. Related Museums

Consultation may take place with other museums including the West Highland Museum, Mallaig Heritage Centre, Scottish Railway Exhibition, Riverside Museum and the National Railway Museum.

8. Archival Holdings

The museum follows the Code of Practice on Archives for Museums and Galleries.

9. Acquisition Policy

Every acquisition is subject to due diligence, valid ownership checks and compliance with UK law and UNESCO conventions on illicit cultural property.

10. Human Remains

The museum neither holds nor intends to acquire human remains.

11. Biological & Geological Material

The museum does not collect biological or geological material.

12. Archaeological Material

Archaeological material will only be acquired where Scottish legal requirements and Treasure Trove procedures have been followed.

13. Exceptions

Exceptions are made only where authorised repositories or relevant authorities approve such action.

14. Spoliation

The museum follows national guidance regarding works displaced during the Nazi era and World War II.

15. Repatriation & Restitution

Requests are considered individually within legal and ethical frameworks.

16. Disposal Procedures

All disposals follow SPECTRUM procedures, are approved by the governing body, prioritise transfer to Accredited Museums, maintain full documentation and ensure proceeds directly benefit the collection.
